Silver Columns: Brow Beaten Joe Goddard of Hot Chip Remix

curious
Okay so I’d love to tell you more about the bands but I have zip, nada. All I know is this is them and their track “Brow Beaten”. There is no info online and all I actually know is that Joe Goddard remixed this track. In any case, it is kinda hypnotic so take a listen. Doesn’t that voice sound familiar? Hmm..

Makeup Artist: Alex LaMarsh

Subject: Alex LaMarsh
Location: Los Angeles, CA
Agency: Artists Untied
# of years = 8

How did you initially get your start as a makeup artist?

I started off as a model. I had to do my makeup for shoots a lot so I put together a small kit of makeup to bring on shoots that were trade or tests in case the makeup artist flaked. Often the photographer would ask me to do the other models makeup after seeing my makeup. After a while they started calling me to do makeup & hair on their shoots. It was fun & I really enjoyed it so I did a bunch of testing as a makeup/hair artist. Once I decided I was bored with modeling I just jumped into makeup & already had a book built.

What is your most memorable makeup moment thus far?

If it’s an onset moment I’d have to say it would be on set for the Surface or Zink magazine shoots. Surface we had the models jumping on a giant trampoline & I had to run in to fix the sculpted hair styles constantly because of the impact of the jumping. Zink we had our model contorted into a yoga like position while suspended in the air with rope. Doing lip touch ups on a model dangling above you is interesting.

Who or what inspires you as a makeup artist?

Color & texture is what makes me want to keep doing what I do.

What is the one thing about the industry that you love/hate?

I love the fleeting aspect of the work. The team comes together to create a mood and an image, as soon as they get that image the whole thing is over and all you have to remember it by is the photo. It’s amazing that the viewer never has any idea of how many people were on set fulfilling so many different jobs, hustling, bustling all to get “the shot”.

Which product(s) are you currently addicted to?

I love Tarte Cosmetics eyeshadows, Estee Lauder red collection lipsticks and Smashbox primers, glosses & bronzers.

Favorite music tracks to listen to at a shoot?

That is hard! I love rock music at shoots, something with fun high energy. ACDC, The Ark, Eazy-E, Eagles of Death Metal, Tom Waits, Jedi Mind Tricks & R.A.The Rugged Man.
